How Not To Let Sleep Apnea Ruin Your Summer

We don’t know how you feel, but we cannot wait for the start of summer in a few short weeks. Summer is a time that is loved and enjoyed by many. Warm temperatures, long summer days, traveling, and outdoor cookouts where you are free to indulge are some of the perks of summer. However, if you experience sleep apnea, you might not be so excited to experience what others love about the summer. We want to share some helpful tips on maintaining your sleep apnea and enjoying the upcoming season. Read on to learn more.

Summer and Sleep Apnea

Summer heat isn’t always your friend if you suffer from sleep apnea. While our area isn’t known for its extreme heat during the summer, we still get some warm days. Since the summer season is the prime time for travel, you may be visiting an area that has hotter days and nights. If you are staying in a warm climate, we recommend preparing your room for nighttime in the early afternoon. Be sure that the shades are closed to keep out the hot summer sun. We also suggest using a fan if available to keep the room cool. A cooler bedroom always results in better sleep. Other helpful tips include:

Drink More Water
Dehydration can greatly affect sleep apnea. Drinking plenty of water daily is always a wise idea, but it is especially important during hot summer days. We also suggest drinking water evenly throughout the day so you do not need to use the bathroom during the night.

Plan Ahead for Travel
If you need any hardware or appliances to sleep, be sure to pack everything you need. Unfortunately, if you forget something, you will not be able to use it until you return home. We would hate for your treatment to be interrupted.

Be Mindful of Food and Drink Choices
Eating too late at night, eating heavy foods, and drinking alcohol can lead to problems with sleep apnea. It is best to enjoy a light dinner and plan to enjoy cocktails in the early evening so as to not affect sleep.
