Do you suffer from TMJ? Maybe you have a loved one who does. If so, you know how it can negatively affect your life. While everyone should aim to stay relaxed at all times, it is especially important for someone who suffers from TMJ. We want to share some simple relaxation methods that you can do in the comfort of your own home. Having not only a relaxed jaw, but a relaxed body as well will help you better manage your symptoms.
Start the Day Positively
It is a great idea to start the day feeling positive. Think of all of the positive things that you may experience during your day instead of focusing on anything that may be considered negative. Take a few moments to meditate, journal, or do anything that brings you peace and relaxation. Be sure to give yourself plenty of time to prepare for the day so you do not feel rushed and tense.
Daily Exercise
Exercising daily can do wonders to help you relax. A brisk daily walk or yoga are two great ways to get movement throughout the day without strenuous exercise that can lead to muscle tension.
Sit Properly
It is very easy to slouch in your seat, especially when driving long distances or sitting at a computer for long portions of the day. Sit as straight as possible with your shoulders back and avoid hunching over.
What to Avoid
While we love sharing tips and ideas on how to relax, we also feel it is important to be mindful of habits that should be avoided if you suffer from TMJ related symptoms:
- Cradling your phone between your ear and chin when talking
- Slouching
- Constantly looking down, such as when looking at a phone
- Nail biting
- Biting pens or other items
- Opening your mouth wide to eat something, such as a sandwich or an apple
