At Atlas Orofacial Pain & Apnea Group, we provide life-changing treatment to patients who are suffering from TMJ dysfunction. November is TMJ Awareness Month, which is a month dedicated to helping make more people aware of TMJ.
TMJ stands for the temporomandibular joint, which is the ball and socket joint that attaches the lower jaw to the base of the skull. If you place your fingers on the back of your jaw near your ear and open your mouth, you can feel the temporomandibular joint move.
Awareness Can Lead to a Diagnosis
Unfortunately, there are many people who live every day suffering from TMJ dysfunction and remain undiagnosed. The symptoms of TMJ are also the same as many other medical conditions. When patients are experiencing frequent issues such as headaches and ear pain, they may think they are having a problem with allergies, an ear infection, or a sinus infection. When these individuals visit another medical professional who doesn’t specialize in TMJ, they may be misdiagnosed and become frustrated when symptoms don’t improve. This can continue as a vicious cycle until those suffering eventually give up.
TMJ Awareness Month can help people who are suffering learn more about TMJ and how a proper diagnosis and treatment plan can improve their quality of life moving forward. If you or a loved one is experiencing any of the following issues, we would love to meet with you:
- Jaw pain and discomfort
- Face, back, or neck pain
- Frequent headaches
- Earache or ringing of the ears
- Lockjaw
- Clicking or popping of the jaw
